Not so long ago, digital circuit design was a matter of manipulating blocks composed of the fundamental logic gates AND, OR, NOT, NOR, NAND, and Exclusive-OR to perform or 'realize' the desired function. These gates became widely applied as a result of the miniaturization of transistor circuits achieved through metal and material advances as well as through the evolution and increased sophistication of manufacturing technologies. The miniaturization of these logic building blocks have now made way for million-cell gate arrays sporting diverse design technologies and manufacturing methods. Logic gates are now available in the form of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), programmable logic devices (PLDs), PALs, GALs, custom gate arrays, etc. Digital signal processors (DSPs), complex-instruction-set-computers (CISC), reduced-instruction-set-computers (RISC), microprocessors (MPUs) and microcontrollers (MCUs) are now configurable adjacent to the glue logic - peripheral functions required to accommodate the desired application. Logic cell (integrated) circuits used to store particular 'states' or data memory (NAND-based memory) has revolutionized the computing environment over the last several years. Nearly a third of the western world is equipped with a level of computing power at their fingertips the "likes" of which was beyond comprehension just a few years ago.
